The Funan Techo Canal Project in Cambodia

The Funan Techo Canal Project in Cambodia

The construction of the Funan Techo Canal, 180-kilometer-long artificial waterway will link the capital Phnom Penh to the coastal province of Kep.

The primary objectives are to decrease transportation expenses for goods between the capital and the nation’s only deep-sea port, Sihanoukville, while reducing dependency on Vietnamese ports. Currently, Cambodian businesses, particularly textile producers around Phnom Penh, have relied on road and rail convoys or motorized barges to transport their goods to major Vietnamese ports in the Mekong Delta.
The Funan Techo Canal will directly link the Mekong River, which traverses a significant portion of Cambodian territory, with its infrastructure set to be optimized as well, to its own ports on the Gulf of Thailand.

Phnom Penh to the Gulf:

New Canal Unlocks Cambodian Exports

This initiative will streamline the export process for Cambodia, aiming to link Phnom Penh Port with capital factories and Sihanoukville Port on the Gulf of Thailand.
By reducing their reliance on Vietnamese ports, the canal project will provide a cost-effective option for transporting goods, thereby enhancing Cambodia’s self-sufficiency.
The 180-kilometer Techo Funan Canal is expected to be built within four years. Notably, its length will be within 16 kilometers (10 miles) of the Suez Canal:

  • Length: 180 km
  • Width: 100 m
The $1.7 billion project will be financed as part of China’s “the New Silk Road”, which seeks to broaden its presence in Southeast Asia. China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), will be responsible for constructing the infrastructure, the project will involve canal construction using a “build-operate-transfer” (BOT) model.

The canal will offer a direct route to Sihanoukville Port, eliminating the need to rely on Vietnamese infrastructure and significantly cutting down on transportation expenses.

The Funan Techo Canal Project in Cambodia aims to stimulate trade and boost the economy by enabling faster and more efficient movement of goods between Phnom Penh (the capital) to the coastal province of Kep on the Gulf of Thailand. By utilizing this canal, Cambodian businesses will be able to expedite their shipments (Import and exportation) to international markets, thus enhancing the country’s trade and economy. This will result in reduced transportation costs as compared to the current methods which involve road and rail convoys or motorized barges to transport goods to Vietnamese ports.

The Benefits of the Funan Techo Canal Project for Cambodia is to Stimulate Trade and Economy

  • Right now, businesses need to use road and rail convoys that are not yet well developed or motorized barges for transporting goods to Vietnamese ports. The canal will allow for quicker and more effective transportation of goods between Phnom Penh (the capital) and Kep Port on the Gulf of Thailand. Cambodian companies can speed up their product deliveries to global markets, enhancing the country’s trade and economy.
  • The costs of transportation will decrease. The canal will greatly cut transportation expenses by offering a direct path to Sihanoukville Port, without depending on Vietnamese facilities.
  • In addition, the canal construction and operation will require local labor. This will create employment opportunities and contribute to the economic development of regions traversed by the canal. With the new infrastructure improvements that enhance transportation, surrounding areas could also leverage new business and investment opportunities. We believe that these opportunities will attract foreign investments.

Strengthening Geopolitical Position

Project financed under China’s “Belt & Road Initiative”.

  • This strengthens ties between the two countries and positions Cambodia as a key regional partner.
  • The canal could also serve as a transit route for trade between China and other Southeast Asian nations.

The Funan Techo Canal stands as a testament to Cambodia’s commitment to infrastructure development and economic growth.

Its completion not only signifies a major investment in the country’s future but also promises substantial economic benefits for the nation. With greater connectivity, improved transportation, and enhanced trade opportunities, the canal is poised to fuel Cambodia’s economic development and prosperity for years to come.
